Matt's Bio

The Lord opened my eyes to see his beauty and grace 3 days before my 18th birthday. A friend had faithfully been sharing the gospel and walking with me for over a year before I finally surrendered to God’s call. I have yet to recover from that moment. I have been actively involved in ministry in one way or another ever since. I taught elementary-aged boys in Sunday School, ran recreation for VBS, was a youth intern and was a student minister in a small church near Houston before heading to Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, where I received a bachelor’s degree in Bible. While at Hardin-Simmons, I became the teacher of an inter-denominational Bible study for college students called Grace. I was also on staff at Beltway Park Church. During this time, I also met my beautiful wife, Lauren. In 1999, we were married. After several years in Abilene, I continued my itinerant-speaking ministry with a home base in Dallas.

In 2002, I became pastor of First Baptist Church of Highland Village, now known as The Village Church. In a way, I have grown up at TVC. All three of our children were born here. Audrey in 2003, Reid in 2005, and Norah in 2009. God did a profound and healing work in our marriage and has used the people of TVC as a safe place for us to grow into maturity as a family. I have been pastoring here for over 20 years and hope to get another 20. I am passionate about the church and church planting and have been involved in an executive function in Acts 29 for over a decade now.

I love to be outside, hunt, train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, eat good food, laugh until my face hurts, and hang with close friends around a fire pit. My soul is most at home where there is a biblical seriousness that’s spiritually vibrant and alive with a missional zeal. If you listen to me preach or read the things I’ve written I hope this comes through.

I travel to preach often, and love sharing the gospel with whoever will listen and have also written several books. With my next 20 years of ministry, I plan to continue to share Christ’s love as often as I can through TVC, Acts 29, speaking, and writing.
